Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

BLC - BRITISH LANGUAGE CENTRE

1095 Budapest, Soroksári street 32-34.
Haller Gardens E building, 6th floor

Hungarian native and native-speaking, graduate language teachers who have immeasurable experience to help you fully achieve your goals with us. You will be happy to participate in their classes, they will assist you with everything, hold your hand and their work is their passion. They participate in continuous training and the most important thing for them is to fully satisfy YOUR needs.

If you can't attend a class in person, as all of our group and private lessons are hybrid, you can still join online. If you give at least 24 hours notice that you can't attend a given class, that time will not be deducted and your module will continue.

We cannot offer a refund, but you can complete your remaining hours in any course of the same level within one year and continue your studies. We always look forward to welcoming you back.

Our language school prepares its students for all Hungarian-accredited and international language exams (general, professional), and we know exactly which type of language exam is most suitable for whom.

There are no big differences, as the CEF (Central European Framework) precisely defines the leveling, it is standardized, only the style and type of tasks of the language exam differ from time to time, and the role of the examiners and the examinees in the oral part changes.

Trust us that we will choose the most suitable language exam type for you! If you insist on one of them, or you have to pass a prescribed language exam, you don't have to despair, you will successfully overcome the obstacle.

General language exams: ITK Origó, BME, ECL, TÁRSALKODÓ, DEXAM, PANNON. International general language exams: LANGUAGECERT, TELC, EURO, ECL, CITY & GUILDS, TOIEC, CAMBRIDGE, TRINITY, IELTS Professional language exams: BGF, GREENWAY, CAMBRIDGE BEC VANTAGE/HIGHER, PROFEX, KITEX, OECONOM, LCCI, EFB, GAZDÁLKODÓ, ARMA, STANAG

A1 - A2 - B1 180 hours (6 modules) - BASIC
B1 - B2 150 hours (4 + 1 module - with intermediate language exam preparation) - INTERMEDIATE
B2 upper - C1 120 hours (3 + 1 module - with advanced language exam preparation) - ADVANCED

Taking into account a normal pace of progress (2x3 / 2x4 hours per week), from the absolute beginner level (A1) to the independent language user level B1 (state-recognized basic level), the time spent and the energy invested will be 4-5 months.

Between B1 - B2 (state-recognized intermediate level), you can progress at a faster pace towards your intermediate language exam certificate. At the same normal pace (2x3 / 2x4 hours per week), 120 hours of curriculum and 30 hours of language exam preparation await you. In summary, we can say that even while working / studying, attending classes regularly and studying, WITH US you can obtain your intermediate language exam in 8 months, and your advanced language exam certificate after 12 months.

Learning is a process! So, if someone promises that you can acquire language skills in an unrealistic, albeit extremely short time - no matter what method or tool - they are definitely  homo sapiens who want to get rich quick and do not have professional knowledge. Your motivation and active participation in classes and homework is really needed. In addition, WE are also dedicated and are 100% by your side from a pedagogical, psychological, human, and professional point of view, supporting and encouraging you.

A few tips for developing skills:
Reading books/magazines/specialised literature (online, paper-based, in e-book form) is excellent and fun for expanding your vocabulary. There are publications and easy readings for all language levels, even interspersed with tasks. Reading a few pages a day can be a very useful investment of time.

The importance of correct pronunciation, vocabulary development, and the use of appropriate sentence structure are essential, so watching films, BBC/CNN news channels, and series with subtitles (first in Hungarian, later in English) is a very obvious and highly recommended practice.

The Internet is a "treasure chest"; in terms of audio materials, films, series, tasks, and vocabulary development games, we can easily find a few pages that are worth a treasure to us with any search program.

You cannot learn words from a dictionary so that we can insert them into our active vocabulary when given the opportunity, we can only rely on our short-term memory, which is finite! An associative technique is needed, namely, we have to connect the words to something. This can be a sentence, a situation, a picture, or even an experience. Making word cards can also be a solution, but in all cases they must be used associatively.

Since the language exam also has conversations by topic, it is also a good idea to learn relevant words according to this, i.e. by topic, divided into conceptual groups.

OPENNESS, MOTIVATION, PERSEVERANCE!

For us, language learning is not a compulsion, but a fun and successful experience, just as our teachers are passionate about teaching and seeing the liberated smiles, the fruits of success. Language learning should always be combined with an activity that we enjoy doing.

Fear of communication, which is mostly based on external reinforcements and sometimes it is strange to hear your own voice. You need to be OPEN, ACCEPTING AND COURAGEOUS! It is important to learn the language out loud, so on the one hand we get used to our voice, and on the other hand we learn more easily after hearing it. What happens if we can't think of a word or can't express ourselves?! NOTHING! We look for a synonym, or describe it... we are not a walking dictionary, our job is to use the language correctly, fluently and consciously.

- Constantly starting over can also be a block in a person. However, there is nothing wrong with that, LET IT GO! You are here now to learn the language and for that you will do everything, sparing no time/energy/money. YOU ARE THE ONE who makes things work and not the circumstances! Get started NOW, because you know what you want, you know what you need to do, we will fully support you in achieving your goals.

- Do you forget words, even though you learned them, you can't use them in the right situations? Associative word learning has already been mentioned, and repetition is the "father of knowledge", the combination of the two is the key to successful word learning and the cornerstone of your vocabulary development. Never memorise, it's just a little bit useful for vocabulary work, but in the long run, when actively using vocabulary, only conscious learning plays the main role.

After many years of studying, working and experiencing abroad, I can confidently say that DOES NOT MATTER! After all, if you end up in a Hungarian-speaking environment, language learning will no longer be effective, if you learn and use the language poorly and not consciously, then you will acquire a good kitchen language,  but you are not able to  pass the language examination.

At most, I would recommend going abroad because it will open up your horizons, your consciousness, and you will become more accepting and open, you will get to know a new lifestyle, people, culture and a few prompt expressions in certain situations.

However, if you travel with a good foundation (grammar, vocabulary), consciously pay attention to language use, then you will definitely learn a lot in an Anglo-Saxon environment and if you have the opportunity, GO FOR IT!

The essence of language learning is not the time you dedicate to it, but the REGULARITY! You have to deal with the language on a daily basis! If you have 20 minutes a day, that's perfect, rather than once a whole day a week.

1. Before you apply, be sure to take at least one mock language exam to see what to expect. At BLC, you are constantly tuned into the type of tasks and take several complete mock language exams before you get to the language exam.

2. Don't let the minimum score hover in front of your eyes! If your mock language exam doesn't reach 50%, don't throw thousands of forints out of the window, but rather give it a try and focus on that!

3. Consult with a teacher who knows the process and tasks of language exams and focus on your "weakest points"!

4. Understanding the task is one of the most important parts of the language exam, don't take it as a "piece of cake", and don't do anything on impulse!

5. In addition to being prepared, a lot can also depend on your time management! If something doesn't work, doesn't come to mind, isn't clear, leave it and move on, and you'll come back to it at the end. Try to read what you wrote carefully, at least once more, before submitting it!

6. The dictionary is often a time trap! Only look up the few words that are essential for understanding, otherwise you'll get lost in the matrix!
